Yesterday was one of the hardest yoga classes I have ever taken. It include the same 26 postures as usual and a fantastic instructor that even cracked jokes from time to time. Unfortunately I couldn't laugh because I was delirious. Delirious from a lack of calories and hydration before class combined with the massive heat. It was unbelievable HOT!!!! Yes .... I know it's Bikram yoga and it suppose to be hot but it seemed to be intolerable. On top of the heat there was intense humidity in the room. And it was so hot outside that even when the instructor opened the door and windows it seemed to not make a difference in the temperature. I'm normally a trooper and do not allow myself to sit unless absolutely necessary. I was able to make it through the warm up and somehow fight through the balancing series but from then on I was in and out of postures until I was just OUT. After a certain point I couldn't even try. I just laid there looking helpless on the outside and ready to jump out of my skin on the inside. My mind certainly got the best of me as I thought about running out of the room several times. I couldn't take the heat and humidity yesterday. I got to the point where I was even having trouble breathing. Then I told my self there are 39 other people in this room breathing so you can also breath! I counted my breath, six counts in six counts out. Even though my body could no longer participate in the yoga my mind could. This was a great reminder of how it is so important to listen to your body. Our body changes from day to day for a plethora of reasons. What I love about yoga is that it reminds you to do your best for that day. And yesterday my best was to simply ( or not so simply) stay in the room.
