This is a very peculiar posture. One that may look easy but takes some time to get right. The body and mind must be in full alignment and it forces you to look within yourself to achieve the compression and stretch. I have been practicing for several years and just got it right for the first time this Monday! This posture once done correctly allows for a complete stretch of the spine. Before Monday I never felt the deep stretch in my lower spine that all of the instructors spoke about in the dialog. Then on Monday I ventured away from my Brooklyn yoga home to a studio on the upper east side. The instructor asked me to place my head on my knees first before allowing my head to touch the floor. That simple suggestion made the world of difference. I had an instant "aha" moment and I beamed with joy inside and out as the instructor said "that's it!" Sometimes you need to step away from your normal routine and out of your comfort zone in order to get to the next step! What is true in yoga tends to be true in my life.
